ASIA was born in 1981 from the idea of three Seventies Progressive rock veterans to keep the spirit of their beloved music in the new decade. This is the reason why singer-bassist John WETTON, guitarist Steve HOWE and drummer Carl PALMER, all talented musicians with great curriculum, got together with THE BUGGLES' keyboardist recently integrated to YES, Geoffrey DOWNES, in order to create a fashionable rock star band. After their eponymous album's world success, which include among others the hit "Heat Of The Moment", the band evolved according to the musicians' changes and became more commercial and less ambitious. "Astra" and "Alpha" represent the CD versions of two albums issued in the mid-eighties by this AOR superband. Performing direct, efficient, elaborated and always pleasant melodies, ASIA played in Philadelphia in November 1992, and this was a way to try out the new line-up on stage. Next to Geoff DOWNES, we could see the new bassist-singer John PAYNE, guitarist Vinny BURNS and drummer Trevor THORNTON. The "Rock And Roll Dreams - Live" setlist is at the same level as the rest of the group's works, in all its line-ups, starting by three tracks from the first album "Wildest Dreams", "Heat Of the Moment" and "Only Time will Tell" (Steve HOWE is even quite present there !). The new album is not forgotten though, given that it is represented by four tracks from "Aqua" (1992). As a bonus, we are given three songs recorded two years later by the keyboardist and the bassist-singer with guitarist Aziz IBRAHIM and with drummer Mike STURGIS. Recorded that same year, the double-CD "Live In Osaka" is the first ASIA recording that features vocalist John PAYNE. Steve HOWE is there back in the band, and the same happens on "Live At The Town And Country Club" that same year. "Now - Live in Nottingham" issued in 1990, was at first aimed at promotion. The line-up included then the original members John WETTON, Geoffrey DOWNES & Carl PALMER. "Live In Köln", another double-CD was issued in 1994, while "Live In Philadelphia" was recorded live in November 1992. Finally, Geoffrey DOWNES found some previously unreleased recordings when he got back to the former studio used by ASIA. Those recordings were of great quality, spanned the years from 1987 to 1995, and included some interesting tracks. And the same happens with "Rare", a collection of previously unreleased tracks. The "Classic Rock Legends" DVD concentrates obviously on the best themes of John WETTON, Carl PALMER, Geoff DOWNES & Steve HOWE. Helped by a blameless realisation and sound quality, here can be found the almost totality of the "Now - Live In Nottingham" (1990) compositions. The 1982 eponymous album was the one which brought them a great success commercial as well as artistic.
